This death leads to a chain for other deaths, as Chris and his partner, Detective Vann, are trying to figure out what is going on. In Head On Chris is involved with an investigation of a death of a Hilketa (a game played on large stadiums by Haden players controlling special-purpose threeps ) player during an important game. Chris works for FBI investigating Haden-related crimes.

The protagonist, Chris Shane (for the second book in a row we do not know Chris's gender, as no one ever in a book uses a gendered pronoun to refer to Chris, and Chris for his or her part, never expresses any gender identity) is a child of a famous basketball player-turned billionaire. People with Haden's have a virtual world in which they congregate, and through neural implants, they can control robotic bodies, 'threeps' and communicate with others IRL. Plot: This is a second book set in the near future world where about 1% of Earth population is afflicted with something called Haden's Syndrome - a disease that leaves the patient 'locked in' - unable to move any muscle of their body, while being conscious and maintaining full mental capacity.
